Community Profile 3

Published: Wednesday, 17 September 2014

In the third of the series on the National Church Life Survey Community Social Profile, we look at “Culture and Religion” in the community within 2km of ABC.

Compared with other Australian regions, this community has a much higher proportion of people who were born in a non-English speaking country and a moderately lower proportion of people who claim a Christian affiliation.

About 71% of the local population were born in Australia, 7% in an English speaking country and 16% in a non-English speaking country (the figures don't total 100% because some people didn't answer this question in the census).

About 58% of the community claim a Christian affiliation, compared to 61% for Australia as a whole. 8% claim a non-Christian affiliation while 34% indicated no religious affiliation. The proportion claiming a Christian affiliation dropped from 62% to 58% between 2006 and 2011.

80 Years 80 Layers

Published: Friday, 12 September 2014

We'd like to invite you to contribute to one or more of 8 Art panels to be completed in the weeks leading up to Ashburton's 80th Anniversary Celebrations (25-26 October) and beyond.

Each art work will be created using a different artistic 'layering technique'.

We'd like everyone from ABC to be involved somehow with at least one art panel.

You might like to join in the Art panel workshops during the Spring series, or you might like to contribute images or information. One panel will have layers of black & white photocopies of  historic photographs, one will have our hand prints of ABC people of all ages and stages, one will include wording from our mission statement, and another will have layers of papers & fabrics with as many names of people who have been involved at Ashy over the years. Please help us to collect photocopies of photos of the past and the names of people from ABC who are no longer about but have still played a part.

Contact Wendy for details.
