Wine Tasting

Published: Monday, 18 January 2016

This sermon was presented by Geoff Pound at the Ashburton Baptist Church on Sunday, 17 January 2016.

Reading: John 2:1-11 Cana Wedding

The theme of today’s sermon is ‘Wine’!

It comes with a warning: ‘Remember to always drink responsibly’!

Let me note that many people choose not to drink wine for many good and valid reasons.

I can’t tell you what joy I’ve had researching today’s topic. This sermon wasn’t prepared in the study. It has matured in the cellar. The hours I’ve spent at Dan Murphy’s this week especially cogitating over verse 10 and learning to taste the difference between good wine and inferior wine. I’m not there yet!

Aretha Franklin

This sermon was presented by Geoff Pound at Ashburton Baptist Church on Sunday 10 January 2016.

Scripture Reading: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

After Christmas a video surfaced from the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC. The occasion was the celebration of Carole King and other songwriters, actors, filmmakers and singers.

It was a delicious smorgasbord of songs and film clips that showed the very best of these artists. But there was another singer that night that everyone’s been talking about.

Aretha Franklin was introduced and she entered the back of the stage dressed in a full-length fur coat.[1] This 73-year old walked over to the grand piano and put down her purse as if she’d arrived at church.

Word Made Flesh

This was the first sermon preached in 2016 at Ashburton Baptist Church, presented by Geoff Pound on 3 January 2016.

Reading: John 1: (1-9), 10-18

Ann Morgan is a writer and a voracious reader, but recently this English woman made a surprising discovery.[1]

She’d thought of herself as a cultured person but her bookshelves revealed a different story. She realized that just about all her books were written by British and American authors. She was sad to think she’d neglected so many fascinating stories by authors in different cultures.

completoThis short sermon was presented by Geoff Pound at the Christmas Day Service at the Ashburton Baptist Church, 25 December 2015.

Reading: Luke 2:1-20

About two years ago my wife and I walked the Camino from the Pyrenees in France to the Spanish city of Santiago.

Probably because of the popular movie entitled The Way, there were plenty of others who had the same idea.

I’ll never forget one Friday early on our walk. We got to our destination in the middle of the afternoon.

Because a pilgrimage encourages you to live in the moment we had neither a detailed itinerary nor booked accommodation. We turned up at a pilgrim hostel and they said, ‘Completo’, full up.

There's Something About Mary

maryThis is the fourth sermon in our Advent journey in 2015 and was given by Geoff Pound at Ashburton Baptist Church on 20 December 2015.

Reading: Luke 1:39-55

I remember one night when I was first getting into this preaching caper. It was a Saturday night and I was struggling to pull my sermon together. The Sunday morning deadline was looming all too fast. I looked around my study for that imaginary treasure trove of great sermons stacked behind the sign that read, “In case of emergency break glass.”

John and Donald

Published: Monday, 14 December 2015

JBThis is the third sermon in our Advent journey in 2015 and was given by Garry Lock at Ashburton Baptist Church on 13 December 2015.

Reading: Luke 3:18

It’s a bit of a shock in the lead up to Christmas to encounter John the Baptist!

We just read: ‘So, with many exhortations he preached good news to the people’.

Doesn’t sound like good news to me. Certainly preaching, certainly riveting for the crowd, but good? More like Donald Trump scaring people than Jesus calling people to live life to the full, or to follow him.

Where were you?

Published: Monday, 07 December 2015

This is the second sermon in our Advent journey in 2015 and was given by Geoff Pound at Ashburton Baptist Church on 6 December 2015.

Luke 3:1-6 Plane 1215

Where were you?

Where were you when you heard the news on 9/11 of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers in New York?

Where were you when you heard the news of Lady Diana’s car accident that led to the announcement of her death?

For those of you a little older, where were you when astronauts first set foot upon the moon?

Those of you older still, where were you when you heard of the assassination of President John F Kennedy?
