Membership

All are welcome to join us in worship and to participate in the life of Ashburton Baptist Church. We encourage those who want to make ABC their church home to commit to membership of the church through the steps outlined below. Everyone is welcome to participate in the life of the church. You do not need to formally join in order to belong but the step of becoming a member is available. Membership carries with it the notion of a covenant — a mutual agreement between an individual and a community with benefits and responsibilities both ways.

Becoming a member is not mandatory, but it is a significant step. Membership says:

  • I have a personal faith in Jesus Christ, and a commitment to the church of which Jesus is head.
  • I want to identify with this faith community. This is the church where I want to take on the risks and joys of being part of the people of God.
  • I belong to the people of God here. I will be supported by the people of this church, and will in turn support them as needs arise and opportunities allow.
  • I take an interest in how this community governs itself, and I am willing to be part of its decision-making. I am given a voice in the direction of this church.

Steps to membership

  • 1.  Start attending, get involved, feel you belong.
  • 2.  Find out about membership and decide to become a member.
  • 3.  Obtain a membership application form. Fill it out and return it to a pastor or the church office.
  • 4.  Representatives of the church leadership team (pastors and deacons) will contact you.
Your application form will then be considered by them, usually at their next monthly meeting.
  • 5.  You will be informed as soon as your membership application is approved. You are an ABC member!
  • 6.  You will be formally welcomed as a new member at the next church meeting (usually held quarterly).
