20 March Welcome Study

On 14 February we commenced a series based on the Sunday Scriptures and sermons at ABC under the theme of ‘Welcome’.

Questions are provided each week and posted in ABC’s Friday eBulletin and on the ABC web site. These resources are designed to be a format and stimulus for people wanting to study the passages in small study groups or to do individual study. Don’t feel you have to address all the questions in a group session. Begin by reading the Scripture passage slowly and meditatively, asking God to reveal important things for you to know and act upon.

You may want to read and/or listen to the sermon appropriate to the week as it is posted on the ABC web site. Links to the Sermon Podcasts and Sermon Scripts.

Study 6—Welcoming with Palms and Praises

Read through this passage and highlight the words or phrases that puzzle and/or impress you.

Luke 19:28-40

  • 19:28 After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
  • 19:29 When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives,
he sent two of the disciples,
  • 19:30 saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt
that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
  • 19:31 If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it.'"
  • 19:32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them.
  • 19:33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?"
  • 19:34 They said, "The Lord needs it."
  • 19:35 Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.
  • 19:36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road.
  • 19:37 As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the
disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen,
  • 19:38 saying, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory
    in the highest heaven!"
  • 19:39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop."
  • 19:40 He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out."

Prophecy and Preparation v29-34

Zechariah 9: 9 says:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!     Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you;     triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey,     on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

1. In what ways did Luke’s account of the procession of the Messiah serve as a fulfillment of Zechariah’s prophecy?

2. Any intriguing aspects to the process of securing the donkey? (v29-34)

Welcoming Jesus (v35-38)

3. How did the people welcome Jesus and what does this teach us about giving a hearty welcome?

4. How do we explain the change from cries of praise at the start of the week to shouts of ‘Crucify Him’ at the week’s end?

Pharisaical Grumbling v39-40

5. What was the grumbling of the Pharisees all about and where do we see such grumbling in our lives and around about us?

6. What is the meaning of Christ’s words about shouting stones?

Prayer Suggestions

+ Offer to God any ‘Jerusalem’ you are facing (what you fear, worry about).

+ Shout out your praises to the donkey-riding King.

+ Ask Christ for the strength to stay with him through the entire journey.
